Bourton Vale Horticultural Society

Gardeners and growers have supported the Bourton Vale Horticultural Society over the past 127 years. The Society celebrated 125 years since its foundation at the Annual Show in 2014. At the beginning of the 1900’s the categories of entry at flower shows around the county reflected class divisions within society and the Bourton show, organised by the local horticultural society, was no exception. The top attraction was a category open to professionals and gentlemen, next there was a section for amateurs, though etiquette required that gentlemen amateurs compete with the professionals. The largest category was reserved for cottagers. Then there were the allotment holders*. We are pleased to say that everyone of any age is welcome to exhibit at the Show today which now includes a large section for handicrafts, painting, photography, baking and preserves.

* We are grateful to Michael Boyes of Little Rissington for allowing us to use this extract from his book 'A Victorian Rector and Nine Old Maids. A celebration of Cotswold Village Life'.

The club meets at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of the month (January through to December) in Bourton Baptist Church Room, Station Road, Bourton on the Water, GL54 2AA (map) the only exceptions being June, when the club holds its Annual Summer Party, and August when preparations are in full swing for the Annual Show held on Bank Holiday Saturday. The club also organises 2 annual outings, a full day outing to a place(s) of interest (usually with transport by coach) and a half-day outing (using own transport).
